Points of Interest near the Course

The course of the Yokohama Marathon allows runners to enjoy the scenery of the Minato Mirai district spread out before their eyes, and from the start in front of the Yokohama Landmark Tower, runners can run past the Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse, the Three Towers of Yokohama, and many other tourist attractions. The course also runs along the Bayshore Route of the Metropolitan Expressway, which is normally closed to runners, allowing them to fully enjoy the scenery of the port city of Yokohama.

In addition, the area surrounding the course is dotted with historical sightseeing spots such as Yokohama Chinatown and Sankeien Garden.

1. Yokohama Landmark Tower, Minato Mirai 21 (Starting point)

A 70 floor high-rise building standing 296m tall, Landmark Tower is a symbol of Yokohama. The Sky Garden observation deck on the 69th floor, offers a 360 degree panoramic view. The Yokohama Royal Park Hotel is also located on the floors 52 and higher of the tower.

2. Yokohama Three Towers (around the 5km mark)

The towers of the Kanagawa Prefectural Government Main Building (King), Yokohama Customs (Queen), and the Yokohama City Port Opening Memorial Hall (Jack) are beloved symbols of the Port of Yokohama. Yokohama Customs is designated as a historical building by the City of Yokohama, and the Kanagawa Prefectural Government Main Building is designated as a National Important Cultural Property.

3. Yokohama Chinatown (around the 6km mark)

After the opening of the port of Yokohama, Chinese foreign merchants who came with Westerners began doing business in Yokohama Chinatown, which gradually developed with the increase in the number of Chinese people. Today, Yokohama Chinatown is one of the largest Chinatowns in the world, with more than 600 stores.

4. Sankeien Garden (around the 11km mark)

Opened to the public in 1906, Sankeien is a vast Japanese-style garden that sites on 180,000 square meters of land. Seventeen historical structures are carefully arranged on the garden’s spacious grounds, surrounded by abundant nature. Ten of these structures, including Rinshunkaku and the three-story pagoda of the Former Tomyoji Temple, are recognized as important cultural properties.

5. Yokohama Nanbu Market (around the 20km mark)

Yokohama’s food kitchen, where anyone can shop, and where everything is available and inexpensive. Items handled include seafood, produce, meat, eggs, beverages, rice, tea, confectionery, seasonings, packaging materials, miscellaneous goods, and daily necessities. Five cafeterias are open on the premises.

〇BRANCH Yokohama Nanbu Market
The concept is “a live food market – a hub of exchange connecting the community and people through food,” and consists mainly of fruit and vegetable stores, fresh fish stores, and meat stores, as well as bakeries, restaurants, and more.

6. Metropolitan Expressway Bayshore Route

After the full marathon turnaround point, runners will enter the Bayshore Route of the Metropolitan Expressway, a famous feature of the Yokohama Marathon. This allows runners to run on the expressway, which is normally closed to runners. In addition, the Yokohama Marathon has organized performances at the water stations to cheer for and give energy to the runners.

7. Yokohama Marine Tower (around the 39km mark)

Yokohama Marine Tower was constructed in 1961 as part of the 100th anniversary project of the port opening. The tallest lighthouse in Japan at the time, it stood watch over the Port of Yokohama for many years. The 360 degree panoramic night-view from the two-story observation deck of the 106m tall tower is a must-see.

8. Aka-Renga Soko (YOKOHAMA RED BRICK WAREHOUSE) (around the 41km mark)

Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse is a popular tourist spot representing Yokohama with its Meiji/Taisho brick architecture. This historical brick building was constructed as a model warehouse for the national government in the late Meiji and early Taisho periods. Cultural and artistic events such as plays, concerts, and dance performances are held throughout the year.

9. Rinko Park (Finish line)

Rinko Park is the largest green space in the Minato Mirai area, with an outstanding location overlooking the Port of Yokohama in the outdoor area of Pacifico Yokohama. Relax and recover from the marathon on the spacious grassy lawn. The “Yokohama Marathon Festa” is also scheduled to be held at the same site on the day of the race.
